How to Convert PGM to PPM

PGM and PPM are both part of the Netpbm family, but they sit at different points in the same toolset — PGM stores grayscale data only, while PPM stores full 24-bit color. Converting PGM to PPM doesn't add color that wasn't in the original file; instead, each grayscale value is typically mapped to an equivalent gray represented in PPM's RGB structure, with the red, green, and blue channels all set to the same value.

This is mainly relevant when a specific tool or pipeline stage expects PPM input rather than PGM, even though the underlying image data remains grayscale in appearance, such as a processing step that only accepts PPM regardless of whether the content needs color.
